Coastal bathroom and laundry renovation in Collaroy

A coastal Northern Beaches bathroom renovation.

Just a short stroll from Collaroy Beach, the main bathroom and separate laundry in this single-story, original beach house on Sydney’s Northern Beaches hadn’t been renovated since the 1980s.

A fresh bathroom redesign.

The first step in the design of the new bathroom was to look at how we could optimise the space available so it accommodated the needs of this growing family.

Whilst the bathroom floor area wasn’t small, the original layout didn’t have any organic flow to it.  The old, timber window didn’t optimise the natural light so the room felt dark and uninviting. Additionally, the bath was taking up valuable space. The owners wanted a large shower so were happy for us to remove the bath from the new design.  The new shaving cabinet was recessed into the wall – another space saver for smaller bathrooms.

We moved the original window, which was located on the southern wall, and installed a new, larger aluminium window on the eastern wall.  Not only did this immediately flood the room with more natural light but helped with natural airflow to keep the bathroom dryer and warmer.  This small change had a dramatic effect.

With the bath removed, we were able to relocate the toilet, vanity and shower to create a more natural, organic flow. This gave us more space to significantly increase the size of the shower.  We added a Caroma Luna multifunction rail shower with overhead. This style of shower fixture is really gaining in popularity for several reasons.  The handheld shower gives more control over the intensity of the water, without the user getting their hair wet.  It also makes shower cleaning much easier.  With the bath removed, the handheld shower attachment will make bathing the children hassle-free.

A cohesive laundry renovation.

To create design cohesion throughout the beach house, the laundry renovation followed a similar colour scheme and design to the main bathroom renovation.

As with the bathroom, we redesigned the laundry layout to increase the usable floor area and create a more cohesive workflow.  The washing machine, dryer and new wall-hung vanity were relocated allowing enough space for a large linen cupboard.

A huge improvement was to remove the old external door and brick up the cavity.  This created a large, usable wall space that could be used for extra storage. With an external door in the adjacent kitchen, the old door to the backyard was no longer necessary.  The old louvre window adjacent to the door was also removed and bricked up.  Like the main bathroom, we installed a much larger, aluminium window on the eastern side of the laundry.  Natural light flooded in and airflow was instantly enhanced.

The laundry was transformed from a small, dark box that the owners avoided into a bright and airy space where they now enjoy spending time.
